Our Story

We adopted our son Nikita from Russia at the age of two. A Child Waits Foundation was a major help. Thank you so much.

The general condition of the orphanage looked like something out of a 1920's-1930's movie. The floors were clean, equipment was clean, etc. Everything was older but in good serviceable condition. The workers did everything possible to maintain a clean environment for the children. The baby home's head physician was a beautiful woman inside and out. Our introduction with her was nothing like I anticipated. She served us coffee and teas and boxed chocolates. Our translator went above and beyond, she also became our friend. People in general were nice.

There are many stereotypes of people from other lands, races, origins etc. The Russian people are interesting. The women I have observed are beautiful and look like models. Not what some of the stereotypes make you think, fat, ugly, etc. They are just beautiful. The food was homemade, flavorful and healthy. Moscow looked like New York City. The clothes and cars were expensive, same as the U.S.

Neither my husband nor I have ever traveled prior to our adoption. I guess I was a little overwhelmed by the amount of luggage we took and handled. We were interviewed by journalist (several) regarding the adoption of our special needs child. Also we were interviewed by a teacher and mother considering adoption of a child with special needs.

When we first met Nikita, I was anxious and did not know how my son would respond. My husband Carl actually held Nik first. It was a wonderful moment holding a little baby for the first time, not knowing what he looked like except for a photo that was taken one year earlier. Our son was born with a lack of upper limbs (arms) and a right leg discrepancy. Other than the noticeable things he is in good health. He enjoys food and is thriving.

Nikita carved out his own space. He fit in immediately and continues to be an active family member. The other children were cautious for the fist few moments of introduction but after that it was love at first sight. Everyone adores Nik.

Things are going great. Nik is growing and developing. We are certain he will be able to reach his potential due to the nurture and support of his family and friends. So many people were participants in our adoption process. Especially A Child Waits Foundation. We are eternally grateful and cannot put into words the contribution Nikita has made and will continue to make in our family

Wherever I go with Nik people are always drawn to his amazing personality. He is an intelligent child longing to connect with others in communication. People can't help but love him. His personality is infectious.
