Our Story

We adopted Jack (Igor) Gorman from Russia when he was five years old. Jack is healthy and since he has been home he has glasses and diagnosed ADHD.

When we were in Russia, we saw very little of the orphanage. The inside very scarce and sterile and the outside small playground that was overgrown with weeds. All of our translators were wonderful people. Our host family was very kind and generous.

When we went to the orphanage to get our son, we were overjoyed and overwhelmed. He said to us, "momma, papa, where have you been?" Complete with hugs and kisses.

He has shared a bedroom with his brother since the first night home and met some extended family right away. We had made a photo album with labels of family members and left it at the orphanage between our two trips.

Things have been awesome. Everyday I learn something new from Jack and he continues to amaze me with his strength and courage.

We waited nearly two years to do the evaluation for ADHD because we wanted to make sure Jack had time to settle into his new world after his apple cart was upset. Since he started medication, his school report cards have done a 180.

Two years after he had been with us, we petitioned, and were granted; to have his birthday changed a year younger. We used school and dental evaluations to support our request. Our reasons were based on Jacks emotional behavior with his peer-group, his small physical size, and his age closer to his classmates. The change has been beneficial for him and seems like a natural fit.

More than 3 years after Jack's adoption, he is a happy and healthy second grader, He does well in school and loves going. He is also involved in ice hockey, swimming lessons, boy scouts, and church. He has a growing interest in Russia, its language and its culture.

On a final note, I apologize for taking so long to get this to you. Life has been crazy since the adoption (as you can imagine) and not always kind to us. However, we feel blessed that Jack is in our family and know that A Child Waits Foundation helped bring him home.
